Talking About My Generation

Most people will read their daily "stars" or horoscope in newspapers and magazines, and nearly everyone knows their star sign, or more correctly, sun sign. Some people may take the interest further and explore the implications of their horoscope in books. Some may even visit an astrologer for a consultation!

talking about my generation

As a professional, practicing astrologer with over ten years experience, the bulk of my work is based on the individual's birth chart, or horoscope with the purpose of discovering personality, potential, life direction and motivation and the trends for the future.

A chart is drawn using the position of all the planets at the time of birth, all of which move through the cosmos at various rates.

The moon, for example takes approximately two and a half days to cover an entire zodiac sign, whereas Pluto, our furthest planet in the solar system takes many years to travel through a sign. Consequently, all people in a generation will have this planet in one particular sign.

Pluto, although it is physically small, is the planet with the most power to transform. Here we find crises and disasters in our lives, depending where it is in the chart, and also it will show our potential for healing and transforming ourselves, sometimes over many years and through many different crises

It is the Plutonic experiences, associated with death and rebirth that can have the most profound effects on our life's experiences. In simple terms, Pluto symbolises the power to change and transform.

If you were born between 1938 and 1957, Pluto was in the zodiac sign of Leo. Leo, a fire sign, is about creative self-expression, youth, creativity, the inner child, the ability to shine as an individual.

Does this sound familiar? When this generation reached its teens and early twenties, in the sixties, we had the rise of flower power, youth culture, new forms of music, anti-war demonstrations, shocking new attitudes to love and sex, (Pluto also represents sexuality!), space exploration, and we began to make inroads into the established culture of the time.

The older generation had been through two world wars, and fresh new ideas were bound to take shape at this time. In the seventies, the Women's Movement gained ground with established female roles as wife and mother began to change society.

The women with Pluto in Leo demanded a political voice and liberation from the kitchen sink. The 'burning bra' became a wonderful symbol of this new freedom. (It is appropriate that Leo is a fire sign!)

And then in the eighties, women began to successfully (sometimes!) combine work with parenthood, giving more financial independence and our first female prime minister. This era was known for its 'yuppies' and many women began their own businesses and self-financing venture.

In the nineties, we saw the rise of alternative and complimentary therapies as the Pluto in Leo generation reached their forties and fifties.

The realisation came that the youth culture had become the New Age generation, bringing some of the ideas and concepts that began to surface back in the sixties.

So we have seen a burgeoning of psychotherapy, personal growth workshops, crafts and creativity, and women in business combining economic and management skills with an holistic approach to understanding and relating within the workplace.

According to the US Census Bureau, there are currently 310 million women over the age of 60. In twenty five years, there will be 645 million women and 546 million men. This means that the older woman will have more political power than any other group of people.

So where do we go from here? It will be no surprise that this dynamic generation will be responsible for bringing value and status to the older woman that has been sadly lacking in the generations before ours.

Older women have been derided and discounted by attitudes and beliefs in society for too long, but our generation is now producing some wonderful role models in their forties and beyond.

You can rest assured that this will continue and the wisdom, value and experience will begin to shape the world for the next millenium. We have come a long way when barely a century ago a woman in her forties was approaching the end of her life!
