Cancer - midsummer

Midsummer's Day marks the entry of the sun into the zodiac sign of Cancer. It is appropriate that at this time ancient Druid religions (and others) gather around one of our oldest sites at Stonehenge. Cancer represents all things past, our history and our culture, and our family roots. So this is the time to honour our ancestors; not something that comes so easily to our westernised material society.

For everything there is a season

In other cultures there is an awareness of the continuing flow through generations, a thread that can be picked up aeons ago that will continue on a steady path into the future, from parent to child, through traditional beliefs and teachings.

In America, this natural way forward has come unstuck with the accepted roles of boys and girls being questioned; in some schools, the traditional male values are being derided and discouraged so that there is an active programme of feminising boy's behaviour. A crude attempt to right the social wrongs in a society where gender is becoming less obvious. (Sunday Times, 18th June).

ociety today, however, is obsessed with the present; even last week is history, so it would do us well to pause and reflect a little on what has brought us to this place. Cancer, the Crab, is tenacious and protective. Ruled by the Moon, it represents the female instinct for nurturing and protecting one's offspring and family with an almost matriarchal zealousness.

We can look at the structure that supports our well-being and health on a vast scale, namely the NHS in the UK. Indeed, many nurses and those in the caring professions have planets in Cancer.

But ultimately, Cancer is about self-preservation, and those with a Cancerian Sun are often accused of moodiness and sensitivity. This is about protection as heightened awareness of other's emotions and feelings, as well as their own is something Cancerians have to live with! But ultimately, the domestic environment is crucial and we all need to go out into the world knowing that all is safe and secure at home.
