Capricorn - mid winter blues

The heart of winter in the western hemisphere is marked by skeletal trees and dying vegetation. Here we can see the landscape at its barest and bleakest and it is no surprise that this time of year is the time of Capricorn, ruled by the planet Saturn.

For everything there is a season

Saturn, associated with the passage of time (Old Father Time) reminds us that all things have a season, grow old and die.

There is a huge emphasis at this time in our history on the advantages of youth over old age and some people are willing to carve up the bodies to retain the illusion of youth.

And yet age brings wisdom, an ability to laugh at oneself and many comedians have Saturn strong in their charts. The Capricorn humour is dry, subtle with an edge of darkness.

At this time of year, we make preparations for the next, and finish off projects, to make way for new ideas.

We make new rules for ourselves with New Year Resolutions, usually involving giving up something we enjoy because it's not good for us. Very Saturnian!

Capricorn gives us goals to aspire to and it rules the Tenth House of the Zodiac, the top of the birthchart, traditionally associated with the father figure, or head of the household.

However, in many modern families there is perhaps one head of the household, usually the mother so maybe it is time to regard our Mothers as the Saturnian figure. Who makes up the rules and instills discipline?

This sign represents our journey through life, keeping us on a steady path and progression forwards.

Sometimes we make detours and spend some time away from the direction we are headed in but always time passes. Live each day as if it were your last and plan to live forever.
