For everything there is a season

Only the hardiest pernnials will survive the onslaught of winter, and the trees will soon be bare of leaves. This need not be a sad time, as it is important as a period of renewal and the death of the old to make way for the new. It is interesting that this season is the time of Halloween, a recognition of the darker world of death and all that is associated with it.

Scorpio is a sign that is fixed and its element is water. The concept of still water is a strange one; we imagine it to be fluid and full of movement which it is in a babbling brook or a dramatic waterfall, and yet still waters run deep. Scorpio can be likened to an iceberg; there is more going on under the surface, so we associate this sign with secrecy, hidden depths, an unknown power.

And what about magic and alchemy, which is about using mystical powers to make changes? Many of us fear the idea of change, preferring an existence that is safe and undemanding and yet change can bring empowerment and growth. We can reflect the message of Scorpio at this time, and clear out the dead wood from our lives, and face our shadows for there is the key to wholeness.

"When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn+t change my nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town, and as an older man, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realise the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realise that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation, and I could indeed have changed the world."
